Wesley Lowery is national reporter who covers law enforcement, justice, race and politics. He previously covered Congress and national politics. Prior to joining the Washington Post in February 2014, he worked as a breaking news and local politics reporter for the Boston Globe, and has also reported for the Los Angeles Times and the Wall Street Journal.
“They Can’t Kill Us All” is the culmination of two years of notes, interviews and life-changing experiences for Lowery, which includes being detained by police while reporting on the shooting of Michael Brown and the successive riots in Ferguson, MO.
Lowery has played a significant role in the coverage of two Pulitzer Prize winning endeavors, including The Washington Post’s 2016 Pulitzer Prize winning work for “Fatal Force” and the Boston Globe’s coverage of the Boston Marathon bombings in 2013. Lowery, who spent much of 2014 covering incidents involving the killing of civilians by police officers, submitted a proposal to editors at The Washington Post to build a database of fatalities involving law enforcement officials that would allow for the tracking and analyzing of related data.
From research gathered by reporters, editors, researchers, photographers and graphic artists at The Post, the group discovered and detailed more than 990 fatal police shootings across the nation in 2015.
Prior to joining The Washington Post in February of 2014, Lowery worked with the Boston Globe as a breaking news and local politics reporter. While in Boston, Lowery contributed to the Globe’s coverage of the 2013 Boston Marathon bombings and the manhunt that followed. The coverage of the catastrophic events earned the Pulitzer Prize award for Breaking News.
Lowery was also one of two reporters at the Boston Globe to lead the coverage of the investigation into the murder of Odin Lloyd and the trial and subsequent conviction of New England Patriots star Aaron Hernandez in the case.
Previously, Lowery spent time with the Los Angeles Times and also held highly-coveted internships with the Wall Street Journal and Boston Globe.
In 2015, Lowery was named to the Root 100, a list recognizing the nation’s top African American influencers and was also honored by Wayne State University with the Spirit of Diversity Award. In 2014, he was named “Emerging Journalist of the Year” by the National Association of Black Journalists and also earned a 2014 Shorty Award as the best journalist on social media.
A native of Cleveland, OH, Lowery graduated from Ohio University and the Scripps School of Journalism in 2012 and served as the editor-in-chief of The Post during his time in Athens. He currently resides in Washington, D.C.
