Scarlett Johansson is an actress and singer known for playing the Black Widow in the Marvel Avengers films. She has also starred in Noah Baumbach’s Marriage Story and Taika Waititi’s Jojo Rabbit. In 2016, she voiced Kaa in Jon Favreau’s live-action adaptation of Disney’s The Jungle Book, and Ash in the animated musical comedy film Sing.

Johansson was born and raised in Manhattan, New York City, and she wanted to be an actress from a young age. Johansson began her theater training by attending and graduating from Professional Children’s School in Manhattan in 2002, a school renowned for its theater and acting training to young, hopeful actors and actresses.

Johansson’s acting career debuted in Hollywood and garnered praise and widespread attention with her role in The Horse Whisperer. Following the critical success of the 1998 picture, she followed with major roles as Rebecca in Ghost World, Charlotte in Lost in Translation, Griet in Girl with a Pearl Earring, Francesca in The Perfect Score and Nola in Match Point. Most of her performances received positive critical notice.

In 2003, she won a BAFTA Award for Best Actress for her performance in Lost in Translation. Johansson has also won a Tony Award for her 2010 Broadway debut in “A View from the Bridge.”

Also a singer, Johansson released her debut studio album, Anywhere I Lay My Head, on May 20, 2008. In 2009, she and Pete Yorn released Break Up, a collaborative album inspired by Brigitte Bardot’s duets with Serge Gainsbourg.

Johansson is known as a Hollywood sex symbol, and she has ranked highly in several beauty listings. In 2010, she was named GQ’s Babe of the Year, and Esquire named her the “Sexiest Woman Alive” in 2006 and 2013.

Johansson is a philanthropist as well, having served as a global ambassador for Oxfam in addition to supporting charities including USA Harvest, Stand Up to Cancer, Cancer Research U.K., Too Many Women and Aid Still Required. In 2007, Johansson took part in ONE, an anti-poverty campaign organized by U2 lead singer, Bono.

Johansson is an outspoken advocate for women’s and reproductive rights. In 2017, Johansson spoke at the inaugural Women’s March on Washington, addressing Donald Trump’s presidency. In 2018, she collaborated with 300 women in Hollywood to set up the Time’s Up initiative to protect women from harassment and discrimination. She took part in the Women’s March in Los Angeles in January 2018 and spoke on topics such as abuses of power, sharing her own experience.
