For so long, black people have been considered things. We’ve been thingified physically, sexually, emotionally. With my work I’m looking to revitalize and elevate the black body.

When only 23, Tyler Mitchell photographed Beyoncé for the cover of Vogue’s iconic September issue, becoming the first black photographer to do so in the magazine’s 126-year history. He is also among the youngest photographers to have shot a Vogue cover. Mitchell can be found on the Forbes’ 30 under 30 list, the Dazed 100, and the BoF 500 (Business of Fashion).

Idyllic Space is one of Mitchell’s video installations depicting young black people enjoying the simple pleasures of life – pleasures many take for granted, such as eating ice cream, hanging around the pool, and playing tag. Mitchell cites the 2014 killing of Tamir Rice – a 12-year-old boy shot by Cleveland police while playing outside with a toy pellet gun. Idyllic Space is a visual and urgent call-to-action.

In 2015, the Atlanta native self-published his first book, El Paquete, in which he documented architecture and skateboarding scenes in Havana. An alum of New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, the Brooklyn-based influencer has shown in group exhibitions with Artsy, Red Hook Labs Gallery, and Aperture Foundation, and has worked with Marc Jacobs, Givenchy, Converse, and Solange Knowles on photography and film projects.

With a commitment to reflect humanity, Mitchell is a captivating visual storyteller with a refreshing and original eye.
