Lux Aeterna Dance Company, founded in April 2006, is an interdisciplinary dance and physical theater company, committed to the creation of an eclectic and powerful dance vocabulary through the fusion of various movement forms, such as ballet, modern, Brazilian capoeira, gymnastics, circus and aerial arts, body-to-body partnering, and most importantly, breaking (also known as break-dancing).
Lux Aeterna’s method obliterates the pre-established boundaries that separate the various movement styles it encompasses – which only exist in the minds of their practitioners, and are not actual boundaries – and instead explores movement with freedom and a relentless attack. Our mission, to which we apply this method, is to cultivate beauty from sources that might not be considered beautiful, in and of themselves – elevating, evolving, and adapting these sources of movement into something transcendent and radiant.
“Lux Aeterna” means “eternal light” in Latin – two words which, together, describe the nature of the human soul. This premise is the “punctum saliens” from which all our work originates.
Kujo and Lux Aeterna have garnered some great critical acclaim, and won multiple awards, for their ground-breaking choreographic work. Lewis Segal has said of Kujo, “there’s no more-brilliant choreographer in LA at the moment,” and Segal called Kujo’s choreography “drop-dead awesome in its millennial bravura” in the LA Times. Victoria Looseleaf, in Dance Magazine, called Lux’s work, Metanoia, “a magnificent melding of contemporary vocabulary with street.” Kujo was named one of the LA Times’ Faces to Watch in 2008, and “Choreographer of the Year 2008” by the Beverly Hills Outlook. Kujo and Lux have also earned 2008 Lester Horton Dance Awards for Best Male Dancer and Best Choreographer: Short Form, as well as the 2007 Lester Horton Dance Award for Best Company Performance. Additionally, Kujo and Lux have funded their work with grants from the Durfee Foundation, the Ford Foundation (via the Hip Hop Theater Festival), and the Flourish Foundation.
Lux Aeterna regularly performs to sold-out crowds at major hip hop and contemporary dance festivals, such as the San Francisco Hip Hop Dance Fest and Celebrate Dance, and two evening-length hip hop dance/theater shows at the huge Ford Amphitheatre: Breaking the Cypher and the annual Juice Hip Hop Dance Festival, both of which Kujo also co-directed. Kujo’s choreography with Lux has also been presented as part of the circus show, Cirque Montage (www.wonderworldla.com), and the live drum theater show Street Beat (www.streetbeat.biz), both of which tour nationally and internationally. Lux Aeterna’s dancers were also featured in an underwater commercial in India in 2009, for Indian detergent company Nirma, also choreographed by Kujo.
