Sandra Guzmán is a prize-winning independent journalist, filmmaker, speaker, and author. She has dedicated her writing and editing career to curating stories of marginalized communities in various media platforms–magazines, newspapers, television, books, documentary films, and the web.
For the last decade she’s collaborated with portraitist and director Timothy Greenfield-Sanders on his acclaimed Identity documentary film series exploring race, class, ethnicity, gender, culture, and sexuality in America. She conducted interviews for The Women’s List, The Boomer List, and shares interview credits with friend and journalist Maria Hinojosa on The Latino List, Volumes I & II. The films originally aired on PBS for American Masters and HBO, respectively. They are currently streaming on Netflix.
Sandra Guzmán’s work explores American identity at the intersection of culture, gender, race, sexuality, spirituality and ethnicity. Sandra was the last journalist to interview Nobel Laureate Toni Morrison for the acclaimed American Masters film, Toni Morrison: The Pieces I am.
She is a contributing writer for NBC News online platforms, NBC Latino, NBC Black, and writes thought pieces for CNN and other platforms.
Sandra served as editor in chief of LATINA magazine, the nation’s largest magazine for Latinx women. She also served as editor in chief of heart & soul, a wellness magazine targeting multicultural women. Sandra was Associate Editor at the New York Post where she created and edited more than a dozen feature sections focusing on New York’s ethnic and religious communities.
Sandra is the author of the woman’s empowerment book, The New Latina’s Bible: The Modern Latina’s Guide to Love, Family, Spirituality, and La Vida. (Seal Press, 2011). It is a non-fiction book examining critical issues of contemporary Latinx women.
She was a contributing essayist in Emily Bernard’s book, Some of My Best Friends: Writings on Interracial Friendships. She is a contributing writer in the Marvel Comic anthology, Ricanstruction: Reminiscing & Rebuilding Puerto Rico produced by Edgardo Miranda-Rodriguez.
Sandra won an EMMY for producing a public affairs program on the US-Cuban Embargo while working as an Assignment Manager and Public Affairs Producer at Telemundo’s New York affiliate. She also served as a segment producer on the popular morning show, Good Day New York.
She started her journalism career at El Diario-La Prensa, New York’s oldest Spanish language newspaper.
Sandra’s forthcoming memoir explores the power of art and literature to help heal racial and historical trauma.
She is a recipient of many community awards, including Outstanding Achievement in the Arts from her alma mater, Rutgers University.
