Although Ray Jessel is not a huge name, the people who love him and who have recorded his songs are. For most of his life, Ray Jessel was a TV producer/writer and musical theatre writer. It was only at age 72 that he began to perform his own material. Ray Jessel: The First 70 Years, as his program is called, is a show that people come back to see again and again, bringing with them everyone they know.
Ray Jessel was the last lyricist to work with Richard Rodgers and was co-composer and lyricist of the Broadway Sherlock Holmes musical, Baker Street. His songs have been recorded by Louis Armstrong, Jimmy Durante, Richard Burton, Sammy Davis, Jr. and Vikki Carr, and he is represented on recent CD’s by Michael Feinstein, John Pizzarelli and Karen Akers.
Making his debut as a Cabaret performer in April, 2002, Ray Jessel has since played to a series of sell-out performances throughout the US and Canada. He was a featured star in the Mabel Mercer Foundation’s prestigious Cabaret Convention in Palm Springs and, most recently, at New York’s Town Hall where, says the Hollywood Reporter, he “brought down the house” on opening night.
Ray Jessel is the recipient of several MAC (national cabaret) awards.
