Full Bio
Queen GodIs is an international (Poet, MC, Artistic Director & Performance Art Therapist) whose work serves a host of communities seeking transformation through art. With a holistic approach to content & development, her inter-disciplinary work engages inter-generational audiences in dialogue and activism that extend beyond the page and stage.
Inspired by the challenges and triumphs of her own creative process, Queen founded QGUniversity in 2001 – an International, Traveling School of Healing Arts and Creative Activism. Her creative and facilitation processes have been documented by MTV Radio, NPR, BBC, WBAI, MSG Network, Channel 13’s “Many Voices” and the HBO documentary series Brave New Voices to name a few.
Queen is a provocative lyricist with a penchant for Spirited Spoken Word, Hip Hop, Story-Telling, Movement and Soul… Her work has been featured across the United States, South Africa, throughout Europe, India and the Caribbean. She has written and performed 3 solo off-Broadway shows and independently released 2 albums including her celebrated debut project Power U!. Queen’s work has been published in several international anthologies including the most recent: Chorus: A Literary Mixtape curated by Saul Williams…
Queen was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY – an experience that is illuminated in much of her work. She dedicates time to mentoring youth both locally and abroad, providing holistic consultations for aspiring and professional artists, and generating content for The Adventures of Auntie Queen – a project that chronicles lessons and diversions from her travels. Queen is also producing a NEW Multi-Media Project – an exciting collection of poems, prose, prayers and personal narratives inspired by Women and Gender Non-Conforming MC’s. This work will be produced in 5 formats including an album and interactive performance tour.
Queen GodIs is a recipient of the 2013 Creative Capital Award in Performing Arts.
