A native of Birmingham, Alabama, Sergeant Noah Galloway was assigned to the 1st of the 502nd Infantry of the 101st Airborne Division out of Fort Campbell, Kentucky, during Operation Iraqi Freedom. Just three months into his second tour of duty, in December 2005, he experienced a life-changing injury in an Improvised Explosive Device attack – losing his left arm above the elbow and left leg above the knee, and sustaining severe injuries to his right leg and his jaw.
He was transported to Germany to receive medical treatment, where he remained unconscious for five days. Galloway was then transferred to Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C., and after a long stint in recovery and rehabilitation, he did what many disabled veterans do – becoming withdrawn, out of shape and depressed. The former fitness fanatic and hypercompetitive athlete began drinking, smoking and sleeping his days away.
But late one night, he took a long look in the mirror and realized there was more to him than the injuries. So he set a goal to get back in shape, be healthier and inspire others. Now a fitness guru and motivational speaker, he finds ways to get things done and continues to participate in competitions and adventure races around the country.
A highly sought after public speaker, Galloway travels the country sharing his story, encouraging and motivating others. From elementary school assemblies to veterans’ organizations to corporate sales meetings, his enthusiasm for life and passion for helping others brings a unique perspective to gatherings.
Galloway led his team to victory on FOX’s new hit series American Grit, took third place in Season 20 of ABC’s Dancing with The Stars, and has also released his first book, a memoir titled “Living with No Excuses: The Remarkable Rebirth of an American Soldier.” A firm believer in giving back to those in need, Galloway created the No Excuses Charitable Fund, which raises money and awareness for organizations that mean the most to him, including Operation Enduring Warrior and the YMCA of Alabaster, Alabama.

Outside the comfort zone
Noah has faced tough situations in his life. He was not sure if he’d be able to come back after losing two limbs, and diving into a deep depression. One day, he woke up and chose to focus not on what he’d lost, but all he had left. After months of relentless hours in the gym, Noah’s fitness quickly improved and landed him the cover of Men’s Health magazine. He then stepped even further outside his comfort zone as a contestant on ABC’s Dancing with the Stars. Now, Noah is speaking about how he summoned up the courage to face his fears and challenge himself – and how you can too!
