As one of the original writers for “Saturday Night Live,” she has been a contributor to “SNL” for eight of its last twenty-five years. She has written for “The Mary Tyler Moore Show,” “Rhoda,” “Maude,” “Barney Miller” and “Murphy Brown” (for which she received a 1998 Humanitas prize in writing). Miller was a writer on the special “Lily” on CBS, a writer and senior producer of “The Tracy Ullman Show” on Fox, and a producer of “The Carol Burnett Show” on CBS. In addition, her work appeared in the Broadway show “Gilda: Live.”
On “SNL,” she created “The Judy Miller Show”, “Tess”, “Dancing in the Dark”, and was a co-writer with Dan Aykroyd and Steve Martin of “The Wild ‘n Crazy Guys”. Miller wrote most of the original musical numbers done on “SNL,” as well as many dramatic pieces performed by the cast.
Miller’s plays were performed on stage at the New York Shakespeare Festival. She has written numerous TV pilots and movies as well as several “Op Ed” pieces for The New York Times. In 1992, Miller appeared on Comedy Central as a commentator with Al Franken for the political coverage of the presidential campaign. In 1995, the White House requested Miller and Franken to write and direct the President and first Lady in a parody sketch of the “Harry and Louise” Republican health care insurance ads for the Gridiron dinner in Washington, D.C.
In 1992, Miller was diagnosed with breast cancer, the subject of the Murphy Brown episode for which she won the Humanitas prize. In 1998 she received “The Gilda Award,” for the same episode. She was a co-executive producer of the Lifetime special “Lifetime Applauds: The War Against Breast Cancer” and wrote an original comedy film about breast cancer in 1999.
Most recently, her work appeared in the Writers Guild collection “The First Time I Got Paid for It,” 50 descriptions of “first time” writing experiences by fifty outstanding members of the Guild. She has written for numerous magazines, and her TV appearances have included E! and Lifetime Specials. Miller also taught comedy writing at NYU and Columbia University Graduate Film School.
Miller’s forthcoming book is entitled, How to be a Middle Aged Babe.
