Full Bio

Hinaleimoana Wong-Kalu, a teacher who promotes Hawaiian worldview and philosophy, a kumu hula, filmmaker, and community advocate on a range of issues including Aina-based education, Malama Iwi Kupuna and Mahu/LGBTQI subject areas was born and raised on the island of O’ahu. She is fluent in Hawaiian language and can communicate in several other Polynesian dialects and has formally studied Tongan, Samoan and Tahitian languages. She is a graduate of the Kamehameha Schools Kapalama Class of 1990 and a twice graduate of the University of Hawaii at Manoa in Hawaiian Studies and Education.

Her life experiences include teaching at all levels of community learning, elementary, secondary and post-secondary teaching, working with elders and the larger island community, along with classes taught in Hawaii’s incarceration system. She is a Haku Mele (songwriter/composer) whose composition received the Song of the Year award in 2020 and whose film work includes Kapaemahu, an Oscar-nominated animated short film.
She is respected by many circles of the community, from the public and private sector, in both government and community and by people around the world for her work and advocacy rooted in honoring and uplifting Hawaii and her people. She currently serves as the Cultural Ambassador for the Council For Native Hawaiian Advancement.
