For Katia Beauchamp, “inventing her own reality” was paramount to her success. 10 years ago, Beauchamp and the team at Birchbox examined the lucrative beauty market only to find that – unlike so many other industries that had moved firmly into the realm of e-commerce – it was stuck in the brick-and-mortar world. On top of that, about 80% of the companies’ efforts were devoted to a smaller, beauty obsessed, and loyal customer base, leaving out a largely untapped market of casual beauty consumers that the Birchbox team saw as theirs for the taking. And they were right – within 7 months of launching, Birchbox had hit goals they had set for themselves 5 years down the road, and now nearly a decade later boasts over a million subscribers and 2.5 million active customers.
Beauchamp credits the smashing success of Birchbox – one of the biggest names in what’s come to be known as “Discovery Commerce” – to her unflinching commitment to envisioning a new business model and market that were previously overlooked and misunderstood. By inventing her own reality, Beauchamp has brought to life one of the internet’s greatest success stories. In an incredibly engaging talk, she shares with audiences hers and Birchbox’s journey from incipient start-up, taking on big beauty in all its well-established, formidable might, to the e-commerce juggernaut it is today – complete with all the lessons, failures, and inspirational moments that came along the way in a rousing tribute to the modern entrepreneurial spirit.
Katia co-founded Birchbox in 2010, driven by a fascination with the business dynamics of the beauty industry and the massive opportunity to redefine the way people discover and shop for beauty online. Birchbox, which is best known for its monthly subscription of personalized samples, has more than 2.5 million active customers, 500 beauty and grooming brand partners, operations in four countries, and retail experiences in select Walgreens locations across the US.
Katia holds an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School and a B.A. in International Studies & Economics from Vassar College. Prior to graduating business school, she worked in structured finance and commercial real estate. She has been honored with accolades including Advertising Age Women to Watch, CEW Achievers Award, Fortune 40 Under 40, Inc. 30 Under 30, Marie Claire’s New Guard, WWD Digital Innovator of the Year, and YMA Fashion’s Entrepreneur of the Year, among others. She is currently an Entrepreneur-in-Residence at Harvard Business School, meeting with students and faculty as an official advisor on campus.
A native Texan, Katia lives in New York City with her husband and four children.
