Nationally-prominent economist Jared Bernstein joined the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities as a Senior Fellow in May 2011. The Center is one of the nation’s premier policy organizations working at the federal and state levels on fiscal policy and public programs that affect low- and moderate-income families and individuals.

Most recently Bernstein was the Chief Economist and Economic Adviser to Vice President Joe Biden, executive director of the White House Task Force on the Middle Class, and a member of President Obama’s economic team.  Upon his joining the task force, Vice President Biden was quoted as saying “Jared Bernstein is an acclaimed economist, and a proven, passionate advocate for raising the incomes of middle class families. His expertise and background in a wide range of domestic and international economic policies will be an invaluable asset to the Obama-Biden Administration. It’s an honor to have him on my team.”

Bernstein’s areas of expertise include federal and state economic and fiscal policies, income inequality and mobility, trends in employment and earnings, international comparisons, and the analysis of financial and housing markets.

Prior to joining the Obama administration, Bernstein was a senior economist and the director of the Living Standards Program at the Economic Policy Institute in Washington, D.C. Between 1995 and 1996, he held the post of deputy chief economist at the U.S. Department of Labor.

Bernstein has taught at Howard, Columbia, and New York University and holds a Bachelors Degree in Fine Arts from the Manhattan School of Music; a Masters Degree in Social Work from the Hunter School of Social Work; a Masters Degree in Philosophy and Ph.D. in Social Welfare from Columbia University.

He is the author and co-author of numerous books for both popular and academic audiences, including nine editions of The State of Working America, Crunch: Why Do I Feel So Squeezed? and has published extensively in various venues including The New York Times, Washington Post, Financial Times, and Research in Economics and Statistics.  Bernstein is a regular commentator on CNBC and MSNBC and writes the popular economics blog “jaredbernsteinblog.com.”
