Harry Shearer takes “hyphenate” to new levels – first and foremost an actor, he is also an author, director, satirist, musician, radio host, playwright, multi-media artist and record label owner. Shearer has enjoyed enormous success over the last twenty years for his voice work for the long-running Fox hit “The Simpsons”, on which he plays a stable of characters including Mr. Burns, Smithers, Ned Flanders, Reverend Lovejoy and Scratchy.
Shearer began his career in the late 1960s as part of a satirical news team called The Credibility Gap, where he befriended Michael McKean. Shearer and McKean joined forces in the early 1980s with Christopher Guest and director Rob Reiner as they began work on the cult hit “This Is Spinal Tap”, thus launching the mockumentary genre. Other collaborations with Guest include “A Mighty Wind” and “For Your Consideration”.
During his illustrious career, Shearer joined the cast and writing staff of “Saturday Night Live”, and has released several comedy albums. The humorist joined the online video world in 2007, when The Harry Shearer Channel became a cornerstone of My Damn Channel, an entertainment and new media platform. Each week, a new political or pop culture satire written by and featuring Shearer is unveiled. Shearer writes a popular column on The Huffington Post and his one-hour satirical sandbox “Le Show” airs weekly on radio stations worldwide.
The Big Uneasy: The real story behind why New Orleans flooded and why it could happen again – screenings with lecture and Q&A by director Harry Shearer
Shearer is also a resident of New Orleans and when Hurricane Katrina struck in 2005, the media said it was a natural disaster primarily affecting poor black people. On both counts, the media was wrong. In his feature-length documentary “The Big Uneasy”, Shearer gets the inside story of a catastrophe that could have been prevented from the people who were there. He speaks with local residents, the investigators who poked through the muck as the water receded, and a whistle-blower from the Army Corps of Engineers, revealing that some of the same flawed methods responsible for the levee failure during Katrina are being used to rebuild the system now.
