Continuing the African tradition of storytelling and drumming, Griots in Concert creates a charming, inspirational, educational and motivational performance presenting stories, music and song from Africa, the Caribbean and America. Griot (pronounced gree-oh) is the French term for a West African oral historian or storyteller.
In the spirit of this rich tradition, “urban griot” Linda Humes shares African, Caribbean, and African diaspora stories while encouraging students to become storytellers of their own experience. She is accompanied by master drummer, Sanga, who provides a powerful heartbeat to each story she tells.
Linda H. Humes is the founder/artistic director of the not-for-profit arts-in-education organization Yaffa Cultural Arts, Inc., in New York City. She has appeared in numerous commercial, television, and film projects, and was the entertainment reporter for PM Magazine. Linda is currently an adjunct professor in the Mass Communications Department at Medgar Evers College. She is accompanied by world-renowned master percussionist Sanga of the Valley. Sanga was the lead drummer for the legendary Babatunde Olatunji and has performed and recorded with an impressive list of artists, including the Grateful Dead, Airto Morea, Flora Pura, and Santana. Both Linda and Sanga perform and conduct workshops nationally and internationally.
