His first taste of professional rowing at senior level came when he joined the team for the Eight at the 1991 World Rowing Championship in Vienna. He emerged victorious from the tournament, with a bronze medal. Just a year later, Greg and his brother Jonny would compete in the coxed pair at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona. The duo would take home a gold medal after a tremendous performance, that goes down as one of the most enthralling rowing contests in Olympic history.
The performance and subsequent medal saw him appointed an MBE in the 1993 New Year’s Honours List in 1993. Though this would be Greg’s first and only gold at Olympic level, he enjoyed an impressive career at the forefront of rowing. In 1993 he once again won Gold in the World Rowing Championships, in the coxed pairs.
He would later move into the coxless fours and Eight where he would gain four further medals, before adding a single scull bronze in 1997 to total three bronze, three silver and one gold medal in World Rowing Championships throughout his career. In addition, Greg would add a further two Olympic medals, taking bronze in the coxless four in Atlanta 1996 and at London 2012.
An undisputedly talented Olympian, Greg was one of the youngest MBE recipients in sport after winning Olympic gold with his brother at the age of 20. It was only fitting that his career would end with an emotional, determined performance, reminiscent of his first Olympic Games, at London 2012, as he helped Team GB to stand on the podium on home soil.
A wonderful leader, motivator and person, Greg is both humble and passionate, making him the perfect personality to feature as the after dinner or motivational speaker at sporting, educational, charitable and corporate events.
