Geoffrey Canada has been president and CEO of the Harlem Children’s Zone, for the past 20 years. Canada is nationally recognized for his pioneering work helping children and families in Harlem and as a passionate advocate for education reform. Geoffrey Canada has been president and CEO of the Harlem Children’s Zone, for the past 20 years. Canada is nationally recognized for his pioneering work helping children and families in Harlem and as a passionate advocate for education reform. Today, Canada’s Zone Project covers 100 blocks in Harlem and aims to serve over 10,000 children with a comprehensive range of services by 2011.
Canada has written two books: Fist Stick Knife Gun (Beacon Press, 1995) and Reaching Up for Manhood (Beacon Press, 1998). He is the recipient of many honors, including the Heinz Award and the Harold W. McGraw Jr. Prize in Education.
Canada is the co-chair of New York City’s Commission on Economic Opportunity, co-chair of New York state’s Children’s Cabinet Advisory Board, and East Coast coordinator for the Black Community Crusade for Children.
