Full Bio

Dr. Ssewamala designed programs for poverty alleviation and community development, with an emphasis on asset-development initiatives, for the Red Cross in his native Uganda. He also worked for the Justine Petersen Housing and Reinvestment Corporation in St. Louis, developing and managing programs aimed at assisting low-to-moderate-income individuals become homeowners, access financial institutions, start micro-businesses, and accumulate assets. His current research on Africa focuses on asset-ownership development so as to empower orphaned and vulnerable children in sub-Saharan Africa. He holds a B.A. in social work and social administration from Makerere University in Uganda, and a Ph.D. in social work from Washington University in St. Louis.

While a Senior Research Fellow in the Asset Building Program at the New America Foundation, Dr. Ssewamala researched and wrote about strategies for promoting asset ownership in sub-Saharan Africa. He left New America in early 2008.
