Eve Ensler, Tony Award-winning playwright, performer, and activist, is the author of The Vagina Monologues, which has been translated into over 48 languages, performed in over 140 countries, including sold-out runs at both Off-Broadway’s Westside Theater and on London’s West End (2002 Olivier Award nomination, Best Entertainment), and has run for 10 years in Mexico City and Paris.
Her experience performing The Vagina Monologues inspired her to launch V-Day, a global grassroots activist movement to stop violence against women and girls which raises funds and awareness through benefit productions of her award-winning play The Vagina Monologues and other artistic works. To date, the V-Day movement has raised over $100 million and educated millions. Eve Ensler has devoted her life to stopping violence, envisioning a planet in which women and girls will be free to thrive, rather than merely survive. On V-Day’s 15th Anniversary, it launched its most ambitious campaign, ONE BILLION RISING, which inspired millions of people in 207 countries to Strike, Dance and Rise to end violence against women and girls on Feb 14, 2013, and continues to date as a global mass action campaign. With the women of Congo, V-Day opened and supports City of Joy in Bukavu, Congo, a revolutionary center where survivors of gender violence Turn Their Pain to Power, and V-World Farm.
Ms. Ensler is the author of numerous plays, including The Good Body (which debuted on Broadway and went on a 20-city national tour), Here (filmed live by Sky Television in London), The Treatment, Lemonade, and Necessary Targets. Emotional Creature was workshopped in Johannesburg, South Africa, and Paris, and had its world premiere at Berkeley Repertory Theatre in June 2012 and in New York City Off-Broadway in November 2012. Her play O.P.C. recently had its world premiere at American Repertory Theater where she also debuted and performed In the Body of the World, based on her critically acclaimed memoir. Directed by Tony winner Diane Paulus, In the Body of the World will debut in New York in early 2018. Her short play Avocado opened to rave reviews this summer at the West Yorkshire Playhouse and at the Latitude festival in the UK.
Ms. Ensler is also the author of the nonfiction book I Am an Emotional Creature: The Secret Life of Girls around the World, which was a New York Times bestseller, as well as the political memoir Insecure at Last. Ms. Ensler co-edited A Memory, a Monologue, a Rant, and a Prayer, an anthology of writings about violence against women. Her most recent book, In the Body of the World (Spring 2013, Metropolitan Books) is a brave and beautiful examination of an illness, unlike anything ever written about cancer.
Ms. Ensler’s film credits include an HBO film version of The Vagina Monologues (2002). She also produced the film What I Want My Words to Do to You, a documentary about the writing group she led at the Bedford Hills Correctional Facility for Women. The film premiered and won the Freedom of Expression Award at Sundance Film Festival and premiered nationally on PBS’s “P.O.V.” in December 2003. She also co-directed the documentary short One Billion Rising which premiered in the 2014 Sundance Film Festival.
Ms. Ensler has written numerous articles for the Guardian, Time Magazine, Washington Post and the International Herald Tribune. Her awards include the Isabelle Stevenson Tony Award, a Guggenheim Fellowship in Playwriting, and an Obie, in addition to many honorary degrees. She was named one of US News & World Report’s ”Best Leaders” in association with the Center for Public Leadership (CPL) at Harvard Kennedy School and one of “125 Women Who Changed Our World” by Good Housekeeping Magazine (2010). In 2011 she was named one of Newsweek’s “150 Women Who Changed the World” and The Guardian’s “100 Most Influential Women.” She is also a 2017 Athena Award Winner.
