Dr. Craig Ramey is University Professor of Psychology, Pediatrics and Neurobiology and Director of the Civitan International Research Center at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

The Civitan is a multi-disciplinary research center dedicated to understanding the process of human development and treating and preventing learning and social disabilities. Over 40 disciplines are represented on the Center’s faculty. Dr. Ramey specializes in the study of factors affecting the development of intelligence, academic achievement and social competence in young children.
During the past 30 years, he has led research and development teams involving over 500 professionals and 14,000 children and families in over 40 states. This research and development has been supported by more than 100 grants from federal and state agencies and from private foundations. He has won many professional and civic awards for his work on the prevention of intellectual disabilities and for exemplary early childhood education programs including the American Psychological Association’s Award for Exemplary Prevention Research and the Chataugua Award for Outstanding Contributions to the Field of Developmental Disabilities.
He is currently focusing on educational and public policy factors affecting the successful transition to school and the creation of a new generation of early childhood education, health and family support programs. He is author of over 220 publications including five books and is a frequent consultant to federal and state governments, private agencies, foundations and the media. Dr. Ramey has made over 500 professional presentations and keynote addresses. He frequently appears on radio and television. His latest books, co-authored with his wife, Dr. Sharon Ramey, are “Right From Birth: Building Your Child’s Foundation For Life” (1999) and “Going to School: How To Help Your Child Succeed” (1999). “Right From Birth,” which received a Gold Award from the National Parenting Association, presents the latest in brain research and its practical implications for parents of young children. “Going to School” presents a summary of recent research that parents can use to help their child succeed in school and have a well-rounded life.
Currently, Dr. Ramey serves on two National Academy of Science Advisory panels: one concerned with Minority Representation in Special Education and the other with Developmental Promotion and Early Childhood Intervention. He also serves on the National Advisory Panel for Head Start Research.
