Dr. Carla Hayden is the first ever African American and first female to be appointed to the role at the Library of Congress, which holds more than 162 million items, including many unique items from America’s history. She is keen to make those resources more easily available and connect with people outside the limits of Washington, bringing benefits to citizens across the US.
A trained librarian, and only the third to head up the Library of Congress in its 216 year history, she has held numerous high profile information roles and recently oversaw a $112 million restoration of the Enoch Pratt Free Library. She also served as President of the American Library Association in 2002-2003.
Hayden was CEO of the Enoch Pratt Free Library in Baltimore, Maryland—one of the oldest free public library systems in the United States. As a widely respected advocate of the role of technology to enhance learning and increase accessibility, she led the Pratt Libraries to provide internet access to customers, offer free computer classes, and digitize important books and historical artifacts.Hayden’s career has included stints at public, academic, and special libraries.
She began her career with the Chicago Public Library as children’s librarian.Hayden was president of the American Library Association from 2003 to 2004 and has been a member of the National Museum and Library Services Board since 2010.
In 1995, she received the Library Journal’s Librarian of the Year Award in recognition of her outreach services at the Pratt Library, which included an after-school center for Baltimore teens offering homework assistance and college and career counseling.
Hayden received a B.A. from Roosevelt University and an M.A. and Ph.D. from the Graduate Library School of the University of Chicago. Bernice
