Bong Joon-ho is a South Korean award-winning film director and screenwriter. His films often feature dark comedy, sudden mood shifts and uncomfortable subject matter.
In 2019, Bong became the first Korean director to win the prestigious Palme d’Or at Cannes Film Festival when his film Parasite won the award.
In 2017, Bong was named #13 on the Metacritic list of Best Film Directors of the 21st Century.
His other films include the crime drama Memories Of Murder (2003), Okja (2017), the monster movie The Host (2006) and the sci-fi action film Snowpiercer (2013), with the latter two being among the highest-grossing films of all time in South Korea.
Critically acclaimed film director Quentin Tarantino once declared that “Bong Joon-ho is like Steven Spielberg in his prime.”
His film Parasite, won four awards at the 2020 Oscars. This included Best International Feature Film, Original Screenplay and Best Motion Picture. Bong took home Achievement in Directing for his work on this film as well.
In 2017, Bong was included on Metacritic’s list of the 25 best film directors of the 21st century. In 2020, Bong was included in Time’s annual list of 100 Most Influential People and Bloomberg 50.
