Bob Smith burst out of the closet and onto the comedy stage at the age of eighteen in Buffalo, NY. He says of that time, "I was pretty innocent.

I hadn't even been to a gay bar, but I knew the girlfriend jokes would ring false...so I began writing jokes from a genuine perspective.

I hadn’t even been to a gay bar, but I knew the girlfriend jokes would ring false…so I began writing jokes from a genuine perspective. My roommate found them so hysterical that I couldn’t resist trying them out on-stage”. Soon Bob moved his innovative act to New York City, where he performed in such clubs as The Comic Strip, Catch a Rising Star and The Original Improvisation.

Bob has won over audiences of all kinds with his traditional stand-up style and dead-pan delivery. Critics have hailed his “mainstream appeal with a sarcastic style that is low key and wonderfully effective.”

Bob made his national television debut on The Joan Rivers Show with his comedy performance group, Funny Gay Males, which included Jaffe Cohen and Danny McWilliams. The group has been heard on National Public Radio and in regular guest spots on Howard Stern’s radio show. Bob’s other appearances include Comedy Central’s “For Comics Only” and “Short Attention Span Theatre”, CBS’s “Nightwatch”, CNN and C-SPAN. Most recently, Bob appeared on Comedy Central’s “Women Aloud”, HBO’s “Comedy Half Hour Special” and “The Tonight Show”. He is currently working on a book, Growing Up Gay to be published by Walt Disney’s Hyperion Books and a screenplay about a gay stand-up comedian for Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment.
