Dr. Berry uses her own life as an example to help others become aware, informed and empowered. She grew up on a farm in southern Georgia in a family of 15 children where she was taught to value life, respect others, do a job well the first time and to dream of possibilities.
In order to realize her dream of becoming a sociologist, Dr. Berry worked every job imaginable including factory worker, teacher’s aide, welfare worker, waitress and telemarketer. Dr. Berry received her Ph.D. in sociology in 1988 from Kent State University in Ohio. She has been employed as an Assistant Professor of sociology at several colleges and universities in the Midwest and southeast portions of the United States.
She has stepped outside the academic arena to work in the television industry, most recently as Coordinating Supervisor on the nationally syndicated talk show, “The Bertice Berry Show.” Dr. Berry has researched and published articles on the lives of elderly African American women and on the effects of racism on whites and sexism on males. She has traveled extensively across the United States speaking to various groups on issues of gender, race and change. Dr. Berry’s recent travels to Africa have added an international focus to her interests.
