Tony-Award winner BD Wong has been one of America’s most versatile performers for more than three decades. BD is currently preparing to direct the World Premiere of Mr. Holland’s Opus, The New Musical (co-written by Wayne Barker and BD Wong) at Ogunquit Playhouse in Maine this summer. He has directed on the Comedy Central series Awkwafina Is Nora From Queens on which he also plays the role of Nora’s dad, Wally. He received a Tony Award for his performance in M. Butterfly, his Broadway debut, and has also appeared on Broadway in the musical revivals of You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown, and Pacific Overtures.
On television, he played FBI forensic psychiatrist George Huang on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit for eleven seasons, and prison chaplain Father Ray Mukada on HBO’s OZ for six, and was nominated for an Emmy and Critics’ Choice Awards for his performance in Mr. Robot. His feature film appearances include Birdbox, Focus, Mulan, Seven Years In Tibet, Father Of The Bride I & II, four out of six movies with the word “Jurassic” in the title, and the upcoming Netflix thriller Heart Of Stone.
He also appeared in the Broadway revivals of the musical You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown (as Linus), and Pacific Overtures, as well as Off-Broadway in The Great Leap at Atlantic Theater. His enthusiastic work in American regional theater includes the Williamstown Theater Festival, La Jolla Playhouse, American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco, the McCarter, and the Pasadena Playhouse.
BD’s memoir, Following Foo: The Electronic Adventures of the Chestnut Man, recounts his highs and lows on the road to parenthood, particularly following the premature birth of his twin boys via surrogate mother. His public initiation into parenthood inspired The White House’s invitation for him to participate in a conversation on fatherhood and male mentorship.
He is an advocate for The Trevor Project and its “It Gets Better” campaign and has also received community service awards from GLAAD; the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force; Empire State Pride Agenda; Marriage Equality NY; the Asian American Legal Defense & Education Fund; and Museum of Chinese in the Americas, among many others.
