A respected and popular athlete, Andrew’s main claim to fame is his debut performance at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing where he got to the 400m semi-final and came fourth in the 4 x 400m relay final. The story goes that he was just 0.6 seconds away from winning a medal.

At the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, he also came fourth in the 4 x 400m final and at the 2007 World Championships in Osaka, Japan he came sixth in the relay and reached the quarter-final of the individual 400m. In the British Championships that same year in Manchester, he came first in the 400m final.

Andrew is truly inspirational when talking to young people about his experiences of being a winner and what it’s like to be just millimetres away from victory. Does coming fourth in a final represent failure or does it represent an incredible achievement considering the hugely competitive world of track athletics
