Andrew Cuomo is a seasoned politician, having held high-ranking positions in both state and federal government. He began his political journey as the 64th Attorney General of New York from 2007 to 2010, a tenure marked by significant changes in lending practices at American universities and a dedicated fight against online child pornography. Between 1997 and 2001, Cuomo served as the 11th United States Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, implementing programs aimed at increasing home ownership and addressing discrimination in lending. Following this, he served as the 56th Governor of New York from 2011 to 2021, a role that saw him pass key legislation such as the legalization of same-sex marriage and medical and recreational use of cannabis in New York.
Alongside his roles in governance, Cuomo also contributed to the public dialogue on COVID-19. He testified before Congress on New York’s response to the pandemic, critically evaluating the federal government’s approach as “absurd and nonsensical”. He led the implementation of a statewide lockdown and the shutdown of nonessential businesses, and lifted COVID-19 restrictions in New York once 70% of adults had received at least one shot of the vaccine. His response to the pandemic even led to him receiving the International Emmy Founders Award in November 2020, although this was rescinded in August 2021.
Throughout his career, Cuomo has shown a commitment to public service, education, and reform. In 2017, he awarded more than $7 million in grants to New York colleges to offer courses to New York prisoners. He proposed criminal justice reforms in January 2018, including reducing trial delays and ending cash bail for minor crimes. Additionally, Cuomo is an author, having published the book “American Crisis” in October 2020. In 2025, Cuomo ran for NYC Mayor but conceded to Zohran Mamdani in the primaries.
