Full Bio

James Andrew Miller is an award-winning journalist who has covered media, entertainment, and politics throughout a storied career spanning more than 20 years.

Starting out as a member of the Television Reporting Team at The Washington Post, Miller later became Special Assistant and Chief Speechwriter to Senate Majority Leader Howard Baker. He straddled the line between show business and news broadcasting, serving as VP of Television for Norman Lear’s ACT III Communications, the Executive VP of Original Programming for USA Network, a producer with CBS News, and the Senior Executive Producer of both Anderson Cooper 360 & Paula Zahn Now at CNN.

In 1985, he employed his experience in the political arena to write the bestselling book Running in Place: Inside the Senate. Later, he and co-author Tom Shales wrote Live From New York: An Uncensored History of Saturday Night Live, which spent more than four months on the New York Times bestseller list and was named by Fortune as one of the top 75 “Smartest Books We Know.” In 2011, he partnered with Shales a second time to produce Those Guys Have All The Fun: Inside the World of ESPN, an instant No. 1 New York Times bestseller.

Miller then set his sights on CAA, the legendary talent industry titan that, despite its pervasiveness in American media culture and capital, has remained a largely unknown quantity to the general public. In Powerhouse: The Untold Story of Hollywood’s Creative Artists Agency, Miller provides “an astonishing—and astonishingly entertaining—history of Hollywood’s transformation over the past five decades as seen through the agency at the heart of it all,” from talent management and deal-making, to branding, advertising, licensing, consulting, and even investment banking. For those with an interest in the dynamics of the entertainment industry, or simply those who want to know more about the inner-workings of our media-saturated world, Powerhouse is a must-read.

In addition, Mr. Miller profiled then First Lady Nancy Reagan for Life magazine; he has written for the op-ed pages at The Washington Post and The New York Times, as well as writing a three-part investigative series for The New York Times and articles for The New York Times Sunday Magazine, Vanity Fair, Grantland, Newsweek, The Daily Beast, Salon, and The Harvard Journal on Legislation, among others.

Mr. Miller received his Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and Economics at Occidental College; an M. Lit. from Oxford University, and an MBA from Harvard University, all with honors.
